Undersea cables and their importance, explained

More than 95 per cent of the world's internet and international data traffic travels through fibre optic cables on the ocean floor. But maintaining them remains a hands-on operation. Even as the technology inside the cables becomes increasingly sophisticated, the basic repair processes have changed little over the past century. Protecting undersea infrastructure comes amid growing concerns over accidental damage and potential sabotage of these crucial networks. CNA’s Glenda Chong speaks to Jane Ruffino, a doctoral researcher from Sodertorn University who physically went to find out what undersea cable work entails.
