Chery launches South African manufacturing plant

Chinese auto manufacturer, Chery has moved from an importer of vehicles, to a manufacturer in South Africa, following the launch of its Rosslyn Plant in Pretoria.

The multibillion-rand acquisition follows a 3-year negotiation and comes with the promise of about 3,000 new jobs.

The company takes over the plant from Nissan, which had operated at the Rosslyn facility for 60 years.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile delivered a keynote address at the launch, describing the move as a glimmer of hope for South Africans in need of jobs.
