Sir Keir Starmer has warned Andy Burnham, his likely successor as Prime Minister, that he will have to spend just as much time as he has dealing with global turmoil, during his time in number 10.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC Sir Keir has spoken for the first time about what he called his "intensely personal decision", alongside his wife and children, to accept that his political career was over.

Sir Keir had faced a series of resignations from his Cabinet and calls from remaining ministers and backbench Labour MPs for him to step aside.

He has faced criticism during his two year’s as prime minister, about the amount of time he devoted to foreign affairs and spent on the world stage.
