#WATCH | The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is part of India’s broader strategy under the NDA government to expand trade with developed economies under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
Unlike earlier FTAs with competing manufacturing nations, this agreement focuses on partnerships with developed countries, which better support India’s economic interests.
A key achievement is the protection of India’s sensitive sectors. Dairy products such as milk, cream, and cheese have been kept out of the agreement to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods. Similarly, products like apples, kiwi, and Manuka honey are protected through tariff rate quotas and minimum import price mechanisms.
The agreement ensures phased duty reductions with safeguards, balancing market access with domestic protection.
New Zealand has also committed to a $20 billion investment over the next 15 years in India, making this a significant and balanced trade agreement welcomed by industry stakeholders: Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular & Electronics Association
