In 1961, Archbishop Seo Jeong-gil of the Archdiocese of Daegu invited an Austrian nurse to help care for Hansen’s disease patients in the Daegu–Gyeongbuk region. Her name was Emma Freisinger. Although she first came to Korea planning to serve for only two years, meeting Hansen’s disease patients in person led her to make a lifelong commitment to stand by their side.
For 65 years, she has devoted herself to the welfare of people affected by Hansen’s disease in Korea, operating the Catholic Dermatology Clinic, leading the Lily Association, and carrying out relief and social welfare programs. This documentary traces the remarkable journey of Emma Freisinger, who has shared her life with the Korean people and become known as the “Mother of Daegu’s Hansen Community.”


Ep58 오스트리아에서 한국으로: 떠나지 않은 간호사

1961년, 대구대교구의 서정길 대주교는 대구·경북 지역 한센병 환자들을 돕기 위해 오스트리아 출신 간호사 한 명을 초청한다. 그녀의 이름은 엠마 프라이싱거. 2년 간의 봉사활동을 계획하고 처음 한국에 왔지만, 한센병 환자들을 직접 만난 뒤 그들과 끝까지 함께하겠다고 결심한다.
한국 한센인들을 위해 가톨릭피부과의원을 운영하고, 릴리회를 이끌며 구호·복지 사업에 헌신해 온 세월 65년. 한국인들과 삶을 함께하며 살아온 엠마 프라이싱거 여사의 발자취를 따라가 본다.
