SAHRC flags sewage crisis in EC municipalities

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has released a scathing report into failing wastewater infrastructure and the contamination of rivers, estuaries and coastal waters in some areas in Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay and Kouga municipalities.

The Commission says sewage pollution poses a serious risk to public health, the environment, and residents' constitutional rights.

It has found widespread non-compliance at several wastewater treatment works, while some beaches recorded dangerously high levels of bacterial contamination.

Kim Daniels reports that the municipalities have been given various deadlines for corrective measures to reverse what the commission calls, an infringement of human rights.
