LGE 2026 | Voter registration weekend on 20-21 June

Recently, the Electoral Commission of South Africa's Tertiary Institutions Campaign reached more than 90-thousand students across over a thousand activations in all nine provinces, successfully registering more than 45-thousand students for this year's Local Government Elections. This comes after there have been concerns on the declining number of young people participating in the country's electoral processes.

This morning, as we commemorate tomorrow's 50th Anniversary of the 16th of June 1976 Soweto Uprising, we reflect on how these events shaped today's youth and also influenced their voting trends. We are joined by a panel of fours students from the Wits University: Thandolwethu France, Treasurer at Wits University's Debating Union, Dana Zorkot, Chairperson of Wits University's Dental School Council, Gilbert Nchabeleng, 2025/6 Wits University SRC President and Ramele Modise from Centre for Diversity Studies at Wits University.
