Cat Matlala plea deal in limbo

The plea and sentence agreement between the state and defence in the corruption case against alleged crime kingpin, Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala is in limbo.

The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has rejected the proposed agreement, that Matlala be jailed for 8 years. Magistrate Ignatius Du Preez instead proposed a 12-year prison term, which Matlala is now considering.

Matlala agreed to the guilty plea in exchange for a lesser sentence and turning state witness. He has pleaded guilty to corruption, fraud and money laundering in the R228 million SAPS contract awarded to his company, Medicare24.
