Arriving on Sorokdo in the 1960s, the two nurses spent more than four decades caring for patients with Hansen's disease. Beyond providing medical care, they brought hope and dignity to people whose lives had been marked by suffering and isolation.
Transcending national borders and language, their humanity became a lasting bridge between Korea and Austria. Their devotion continues to be remembered as a symbol of friendship between the two nations.

Ep57 오스트리아에서 한국으로: 소록도의 두 간호사

1892년 우호통상조약 체결로 시작된 한국과 오스트리아의 인연. 이후 양국은 1963년 외교관계를 재개하며 협력의 폭을 넓혀갔다. 그러나 그보다 앞서 오스트리아에서 한국 땅을 찾아 헌신과 봉사를 실천한 이들이 있었다. 바로 마리안느와 마가렛이다.
두 사람은 1960년대 소록도에 도착해 40여 년 동안 한센병 환자들의 곁을 지키며 의료 봉사는 물론, 상처 입은 이들의 삶에 희망과 존엄을 전했다. 국경과 언어를 넘어 실천한 이들의 인간애는 한국과 오스트리아를 잇는 소중한 가교가 되었고, 오늘날까지도 양국 우호의 상징으로 기억되고 있다.
