China's communist party marks 105th anniversary amid complex challenges

China's Communist Party (CPC) marks its 105th founding anniversary with celebrations across the country on Wednesday (Jul 1). President Xi Jinping is set to deliver a speech in Beijing and present the party's highest honour, the July 1st medal, to outstanding members.

CNA's Rebecca Matteo reports from the CPC Museum in Beijing, noting that while the centenary in 2021 featured grand ceremonies at Tiananmen Square, this year's event is expected to be more modest. With over 101 million members, the party enters what analysts describe as a critical juncture — navigating a slowing economy, rising youth unemployment, an ageing population, and a complex geopolitical landscape.

The anniversary also coincides with China's new 15th five-year plan, emphasising innovation and technological self-reliance.
