"We would be able to add value, produce locally and then export to the Chinese market of 1.4 billion consumers. That's really a big deal."
Somalia is pursuing industrialization and export-led growth, boosted by China's zero-tariff policy for African nations. In an interview with CGTN's Zhang Meng, Minister of Commerce and Industry Gamal Mohamed Hassan laid out a strategy to transform the country into a manufacturing hub. With Africa's longest coastline, fisheries – particularly tuna and lobster – are a top priority. The minister also highlighted Somalia's strategic location connecting Africa, the Middle East and Asia as a foundation for future industrial parks and special economic zones.
Hassan stressed that industrialization must create tangible change for Somalis – 70% of whom are under 30. He also touched on Somalia's soft power, describing the country as "a nation of poets" and poetry as a powerful medium for sharing its story with the world.
