Lightning struck Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower as a thunderstorm raged in the skies over the French capital which, like other parts of Europe, has been suffering scorching temperatures for days.

France saw a surge in its daily death numbers last week, at the height of the record-smashing heatwave, according to Public Health France.

There were more than 1,200 deaths reported across the country on Wednesday — when it was sweltering under its hottest temperatures ever — and that increased to more than 1,400 deaths on each of the two following days, the agency says.

In April and May, before the heatwave, France's rate of deaths was about 900 to 1,000 per day.
