South Africa's 2026 tax filing season is about to get underway, with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) introducing a number of changes aimed at making the process simpler, and more convenient for taxpayers.
Auto assessments begin on July 1, followed by the filing period for non-provisional taxpayers from 13 July to 23 October.
This year, taxpayers can expect more pre-populated information on their tax returns, a re-designed eFiling platform, improved guidance on residency and medical aid claims, and expanded services on WhatsApp, including access to assessments and the ability to upload supporting documents.
As millions of South Africans prepare to file their returns, what do taxpayers need to know to avoid common mistakes and ensure a smooth filing experience?
SARS Commissioner, Dr Johnstone Makhubu elaborates further.
