Another key issue is continued support for Ukraine, although important commitments to even stronger backing for Kyiv were made during the recent G7 summit. “Trump will try to steal the show at the NATO summit in Ankara,” Daniel Hamilton, President of the Transatlantic Leadership Network, told TVP World. He argued that NATO faces a challenge in the form of the United States’ approach, which may not give Europe enough time to rebuild its own defense capabilities and adapt to a reduced American military presence.

At the same time, Ukraine is seizing the initiative and increasing pressure on Vladimir Putin by attempting to further isolate Crimea. “The Ukrainians are showing that they do not accept the occupation of Crimea,” Hamilton said.
