Improving water and sanitation in schools

For some learners in the country, going to school still means facing challenges beyond the classroom — including inadequate sanitation facilities, limited access to clean water and poor hygienic conditions.

These challenges, particularly in some rural schools, affect learners' dignity, health and ability to learn in a safe environment.

The Department of Basic Education has launched its National Guidelines for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools, which it says will help schools improve these conditions.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube was joined by Germany's Deputy Ambassador to South Africa, Enrico Brandt, at the launch held at Welizibuko Primary School in Soweto.
