Russian leader Vladimir Putin expressed willingness to return to the negotiating table on Tuesday. But how seriously should one take such declarations?
“I think you should never, ever assume sincerity on the part of Vladimir Putin and this Kremlin and how they approach these negotiations. He has shown time and again that he is not a good-faith actor and partner in terms of negotiations, Philippe Dickinson, Deputy Director of the Atlantic Council, told TVP World, citing poor battlefield performance from the Russians this year, as well as the continuous barrage against oil infrastructure conducted by Ukraine deep inside enemy territory.
Dickinson added that while “we should be looking to encourage negotiations,” any negotiations must be conducted with Ukraine’s interest in mind and with a focus on securing a durable peace acceptable to Kyiv,
“Giving away land to Russia on their terms would not be a guarantor of future Ukrainian security. It would just invite further Russian aggression,” he concluded.
