EU membership the only way to anchor Ukraine in the West | News in Depth

Earlier this month, Ukraine formally opened the first cluster of membership negotiations with the EU. How important is a swift accession to the bloc exactly?

“NATO and the Americans do not see Ukraine as a member of the NATO alliance. So, for Ukraine to be anchored in the Western club and for Ukrainian vital security interests, national interest, (...) to keep Russia at a distance, the only realistic prospect is to be a member of the European Union,” Rostyslav Khotin, Senior Editor for the Ukrainian service, RFE/RL

“And the membership in the EU is viewed in Ukraine and by other European partners and even the Americans as one of the security guarantees for Ukraine amid this Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Khotin added. “That’s why Americans and the Trump administration support membership of Ukraine in the European Union.”
