France records its hottest day ever as Europe swelters under heatwave

Europe scorching under punishing temperatures, with a heat dome bringing dangerous conditions to large parts of the region. France is at the epicentre of the extreme heat, enduring its hottest day yesterday. More than half the country remains under a red heat alert. The heat also triggered the country's first major outage, leaving tens of thousands of homes left without power. The UK Met Office has issued an exceptionally rare heat warning for Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures are forecast to hit at least 39°C, possibly breaking June's all-time daily temperature record.
