PEPFAR Funding | SA unsurprised by US decision to withdraw HIV funding

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has downplayed the decision by the U.S. State Department to initiate a phased withdrawal of the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, funding to South Africa. A State Department official has pointed to what the United States views as the country's failure to make demonstrable progress on policy requests by the Trump administration that have framed ongoing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Pretoria. PEPFAR has on average provided over 400 million dollars to South Africa annually, making the country historically one of the largest beneficiaries of the programme. Correspondent Sherwin Bryce-Pease spoke with Dr Motsoaledi on the sidelines of a UN High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS in New York.
