Raising awareness on online gambling among academics: SAASSAP

Academic professionals body, the South African Association of Senior Student Affairs Professionals will host a symposium to create awareness about the abuse of online gambling platforms.

SAASSAP says research shows that university students are particularly vulnerable to gambling-related harm, including financial distress, addiction, anxiety, declining academic performance, and broader mental health challenges globally.

In South Africa there are also concerns about student financial aid allowances being diverted towards gambling and online betting activities.

The symposium will be held this coming Tuesday (23 June 2026).
