Youth future concerns in Cape Town ahead of LGE 2026

Communities across Cape Town are facing serious challenges heading into the local government elections, with residents citing the future of young people as their biggest concern.

Local business owner, Cathy Ries, says many young people in areas like Mitchell's Plain are being drawn into gangsterism because of a lack of opportunities, unemployment and a feeling of hopelessness.

She says government needs to focus on creating opportunities for youth, warning that without intervention, communities risk losing another generation to crime and violence.

Meanwhile, ActionSA's Cape Town Mayoral Candidate, Dereleen James, says addressing these concerns requires focus on safety, tackling gangs and drugs, as well as ensuring that residents have access to essential services.

James says the city needs stronger community-based interventions, including support structures to address social challenges, while also responding to the affordability crisis and improving services for all residents.
