Drug Addicts | Researchers flag harsh judgement by society

Social and psychological researchers from iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, have flagged the harsh judgement of young drug addicts by society as one of the leading causes of excessive drug abuse among the youth in rural communities. The researchers say the use of derogatory terms like iphara and the exclusion of drug addicts from the societal ecosystem are among the primary causes of the wedges between addicts and their families. The institution in partnership with the Department of Social Development discussed the research findings at KuGompo city in the Eastern Cape. The research focused on malnutrition, poverty, and how women manage raising children affected by alcohol and substance abuse in rural communities.
