Samir Puri, a visiting lecturer in war studies at Kings College in London, says the United States is attempting to undermine Iran’s claim of control over the Strait of Hormuz as it competes for leverage in negotiations.
“There’s obvious attempts by the US to try to show that Iranian claims to try to control the Strait of Hormuz are unsustainable,” Puri told Al Jazeera.
“Leverage is always the currency in which negotiations deal in,” he added, saying it will be critical to see which side generates “a critical mass of leverage to pressure the other side into accepting terms”.
However, the US’s latest reported clash with Iran risks further destabilising commercial shipping, said Puri.
“The remedy may be worse than the cure allows. If tit-for-tat military action persists as both Iran and the US vie for control in the Strait of Hormuz, then that in itself imperils passing shipping.”
