Thabo Bester trial date set for March 2027

The State is to intervene on Thabo Bester consultation crisis to avert potential collapse of his legal representation. The Free State High Court heard that Bester has not been able to consult with his lawyers since his transfer from Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre to eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Facility in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal early this year (2026). The development threatens to further delay the escape saga, with Bester's legal team warning that it could terminate its mandate if the consultation challenges are not resolved. Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana and their lawyers appeared virtually while others accused briefly at the Free State for pretrial hearing. The matter has been postponed to the 28th of August for another case management, and provisional trial date set from the 18th of January to the 25th of March 2027.
