60 days not enough for US, Iran to resolve key issues in fragile truce: Analyst

The United States on Thursday (Jun 18) lifted its blockade of Iran, and oil tankers began freely moving through the Strait of Hormuz after months of being unable to use the critical channel, as the tentative agreement to end the war took effect. But analysts said the US-Iran deal is unlikely to produce a comprehensive agreement within its proposed 60-day timeframe. Alan Eyre, a distinguished diplomatic fellow at the Middle East Institute, says he doubts the current US administration has the means to negotiate a deal that would permanently close Iran’s path to nuclear weaponisation. He tells CNA’s Asia First that while the agreement may help ease immediate economic and shipping pressures, the more difficult issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme remain unresolved.
