Alleged underworld kingpin Vusimuzi Matlala and four others back in court

Alleged underworld kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his three co-accused are expected back in the High Court in Johannesburg today.

Matlala is accused of orchestrating the failed assassinations of his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni, and music producer Seunkie Mokubung, popularly known as DJ Vettys.
Matlala, his wife, Tsakane Matlala, and two co-accused appeared in the High Court in Johannesburg on Monday as proceedings continued in their attempted murder case.

The accused, together with another person, face 25 criminal charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder stemming from three separate shooting incidents.

One of the most high-profile matters involves Matlala's former lover, socialite and actress Tebogo Thobejane.
Matlala's lawyer, Anneline van den Heever, said the defence and the State will work to resolve any outstanding issues ahead of the trial, which is scheduled to begin on 20 July.
