Reflecting pool turns green after Trump's $14M US renovations

The reflecting pool at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., turned green from algae blooms on June 15 after a days-long heat wave in Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump had hoped to fix the issue with recent renovations that cost taxpayers over $14 million US.

The project, completed less than two weeks ago, included installing technology that adds oxygen bubbles to the shallow water and painting its bottom a shade he dubbed 'American flag blue.'

The National Park Service, which manages the site, insists the pool's appearance is a sign that the new water-purification technology — an ozone nanobubbler filtration system — is getting rid of accumulated algae.

The project triggered controversy when the New York Times revealed that the contract was awarded without a competitive bidding process to a company that had previously worked on a swimming pool at one of Trump's golf clubs.
