Youth Day 2026 | What is the state of education in South Africa, 50 years after the Soweto Uprising?

South Africa marks 50 years since the June 16 uprising, when thousands of students marched against the use of Afrikaans in schools, and the inferior Bantu Education system.

Tsietsi Mashinini, then a teenager at Morris Isaacson High School, played a key role in organising the protest that turned into a national turning point in the fight against apartheid.

However, questions are being asked about whether the country has delivered the quality education that young people fought and died for in 1976.

To reflect on how far the country has come, and how much further it still needs to go to achieve real equality in education, we are now joined by Stellenbosch University's Professor of Education, Professor Jonathan Jansen.
