June 16 | Spotlight on economic challenges facing youth

South Africa will commemorate the youth of 1976 - who took to the streets on June 16 in protest against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools. Questions however remain about the current state of access to education and economic opportunities for today's young people. Fifty years later, the country's unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 34 stands at 43.8%. Among these are tertiary graduates. Recent labour force data also point to a growing disconnect between education and employment opportunities in the country. As we reflect on these realities, the Late Edition visited the Hector Pieterson Museum in Soweto alongside some young people for whom these statistics are not just numbers, but lived experiences.
