Following the lifting of the Hungarian veto, Ukraine and Moldova can now begin accession negotiations with the EU. While their bids face unique challenges, there is more than one way in which they are different from what has been seen previously when countries asked to be admitted to the bloc.
"Ukraine is not just knocking on our door asking us for something. Ukraine is bringing something very valuable to the table, and they are giving us access to enormous markets. And this is aside from the security issue,” Urszula Gacek, former Polish Ambassador to the EU Council, told TBP World. “It's not that they are just begging at our door. They're not the poor relation. They have a lot to offer us as well.”
She also stressed that Warsaw’s advocacy of Moldova’s and Ukraine’s membership in the bloc stems from Polish experiences of negotiating its own accession, when, as Gacek feels,
“the older member states tended to be quite condescending, quite patronizing. It was sometimes humiliating to be part of these negotiations. I think Poland, having gone through that experience itself, is going to have much more empathy for the sensitivities of Ukraine and that they are.”
Join our host, Ashim Kumar, and his guest, as they explain how the process of negotiations through the clusters and chapters works, as well as the particular challenges faced by Kyiv and Chișinău, and why, unlike with Poland and the nine other countries that joined in 2004, delaying access to the EU labor market for new members is unlikely.
