CTN Mass Shootings | Gun fire detection contract under review

The City of Cape Town says the decision to terminate and review its Shotspotter gun fire detection contract, was taken in order to determine if the project could be run through a local public-private partnership, that would reduce operational costs.

The previous system is owned and run by a US-based tech company. The contract for the project was in place for the last three years.

It was rolled out in various areas on the Cape Flats that have high levels of crime, including Manenberg and Nyanga

However, the effectives of the programme in fighting crime is now being scrutinised, in the wake of ongoing mass shootings and a high level of murders across the City.
