School violence figures raise safety concerns in Gauteng

Nearly 5000 violent incidents have been reported at Gauteng public schools over the past five years, highlighting the growing safety crisis facing learners and educators across the province.

More than 4000 cases of vandalism and over 400 incidents of sexual misconduct were also recorded during the same period.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says efforts to tackle violence and crime in schools are progressing, but admits the numbers remain a major concern. He was speaking during a media briefing on school safety earlier today.
