Ukraine & Europe now have the cards, & U.S. is not happy about it | News in Depth

Recent developments on the front lines in Ukraine and Kyiv’s ongoing campaign of hitting targets deep inside Russia, including during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Does this mark a turn in the tide of the war? Is Ukraine’s NATO membership getting more likely? And does Zelenskyy finally “have the cards” U.S. President Donald Trump accused him of not having during the infamous Oval Office row?

After all, Trump has said that the war is a European affair and that Europeans should take greater responsibility for their own defense.

“On the one hand, (Americans) are saying ‘we don’t care about NATO, we want to withdraw our forces from Europe. You just do it yourself.’ But now it looks like probably they are quite nervous about the perspective of Ukraine becoming stronger and stronger and also cooperating with other countries in NATO,” Marta Shokalo, Editor-in-Chief, BBC News Ukrainian, told TVP World, pointing particularly to the understanding between Ukraine and the Nordic-Baltic Eight.

“Ukraine and Europe are building a stronger military alliance, and I guess U.S. at the moment (is) kind of looking at it and (...) they don’t want to lose control completely,” Shokalo said, citing the decision to produce U.S. Patriot missiles in Poland as Washington’s way of reminding everyone about their clout.
