National Commissioner of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale on overcrowding

Although there are more than 160 000 offenders incarcerated across the country's correctional centres, female offenders only account for just over six thousand of the national figure.

This morning, we are broadcasting live from the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre in Johannesburg.
The Centre is one of only two correctional female centres in Gauteng, with just over 1,700 offenders, ranging from the ages of 18 years to 70 years.
