South Africa has strict firearm control legislation, yet gun violence continues to take lives across our country. The country has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, eclipsed only by Honduras and a handful of Caribbean island states. Illegal guns play a significant role in the high levels of violent crime in the country. According to Gun Free SA, 30 people are killed with a gun every day in South Africa. This week, a deadly late-night shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, left 12 people dead and several others wounded. The motive remains unknown and no arrests have been made. What steps are needed to improve safety in vulnerable communities?
