If U.S. wants Europe to shoulder its own defense, NATO needs Ukraine | Diane Francis

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made another bid for his country’s NATO membership and already secured the support of some of the Alliance’s European members.

But last year, U.S. President Donald Trump made it clear that Kyiv cannot hope to be accepted into the organization, which requires unanimous approval of existing members to expand. Are there hopes that by the annual NATO summit, which Turkey will host in Ankara in July, his position will change?

Trump is “getting everybody to pay more, getting the remilitarization, getting his weapons to Ukraine, paid for by Europe. You know, he’s got a lot of victories. He’s not going to want to blow this up,” Diane Francis, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, told TVP World. “He’s not there to be a spoiler. It’s really up to the Europeans to take up the cause and (...) do something with it and make it very clear that Ukraine is going to be in.”
