Weakened Russia sets trap for Europeans | On the Record

As NATO leaders prepare to meet in Ankara, Ukraine is looking for stronger political and security guarantees from its allies, including further progress toward eventual membership in the Alliance.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna went On The Record with Adam Jasser to discuss what Kyiv can realistically expect from the summit and why Europe must take greater responsibility for supporting Ukraine.

Tsahkna warns that Vladimir Putin is trying to push European governments into a neutral mediating role between Russia and Ukraine – a strategy that Europe should avoid. “Europe will not fall into Putin’s trap of being a mediator,” Tsahkna says. “We support Ukraine.” Estonia's chief diplomat argues that any future negotiations must be conducted alongside Kyiv and that European unity remains essential to countering Russia's long-term ambitions.
