Iran unlikely to fully escalate war unless US does so: Analyst

United States military forces on Tuesday (Jun 9) launched strikes against Iran in retaliation against the downing of one of its Apache helicopters, with US Central Command calling the mission “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression”. The latest incident threatens to reignite hostilities a day after Iran and Israel halted attacks in the worst flare-up since a truce took effect in April. It also raises doubts about a deal to end the war, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed is near. Ryan Bohl, senior Middle East and North Africa analyst at geopolitical consultancy RANE, tells CNA’s Asia First that despite the US’ latest operation, the ceasefire is likely to “stay alive in name”.
