A legal expert says the seriousness of the charges facing Sergeant Fannie Nkosi makes the question of bail particularly complex for the court.
Professor Mpho Matlala, from Unisa's College of Law, says allegations including defeating the ends of justice and the unlawful possession of ammunition and explosives, raise significant risks that must be carefully weighed.
Nkosi's bail application is set to continue on Monday.
Matlala argues that the alleged links between Nkosi and organised criminal networks strengthen the state's case against his release, particularly in matters involving serious and violent crime.
He says courts are often guided by the interests of justice including the protection of witnesses and the integrity of ongoing investigations and will have to consider whether Nkosi's release could undermine the justice process.
