Hundreds of Malawian mothers, children stranded

Hundreds of Malawian mothers and children remain stranded at Durban's Sherwood Hall, with many having spent days in queues waiting to board buses home. As the voluntary repatriation process enters its second week, concerns are mounting over conditions at the overcrowded transit site and the impact on the surrounding community. Home Affairs officials revealed on Thursday that at least 12 babies had been delivered at the community centre. But on enquiry authorities wouldn't provide any details of the condition of the mothers and their babies. The Malawian foreign nationals were displaced following tensions after widespread protests against undocumented foreign nationals. The repatriation and deportation processes are managed by the South African authorities and the Malawian government. Earlier, Malawi's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that more than 1 200 Malawians had left South Africa in the last two days.
