The US dollar fell sharply on Monday (Aug 3) against the Japanese yen after President Donald Trump and Japan's finance minister confirmed the two countries had intervened in currency markets following the yen's slide to a 40-year low against the dollar. President Trump said a day earlier that the US was helping Japan to prop up the yen as a "signal of friendship" and to help the world economy.
