Human remains exposed at communal cemetery in Mjila village

Years of flooding and severe soil erosion, linked to the effects of climate change, have exposed human remains at a communal cemetery in Mjila village outside Ntabankulu in the Eastern Cape.

Families have now exhumed the remains from 36 graves after floodwaters washed away large sections of the cemetery.

The graves date back to between the 1920s and 1970s.

Last year, herdboys discovered human remains scattered across the surrounding veld, prompting renewed calls for the site to be protected.
