Philippines earthquake: Prepare for aftershocks over next few months, warns expert

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern Philippines on Monday (Jun 8) morning, killing at least 15 people and damaging buildings and infrastructure. It also triggered tsunami warnings across the nation as well as parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Lai Voon Hui, an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University’s Asian School of the Environment, tells CNA’s Asia Now that the quake happened “within expectation” as it struck at a very active part of the Philippines’ plate boundary system. She also shares what dangers people should look out for in the weeks and months to come.
