School roof collapses as massive earthquake rocks southern Philippines

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 strikes the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, killing at least eight people. Footage from an elementary school in Digos shows students thrown off their feet as the roofed structure collapses around them. Staff help calm and evacuate the children.

Eyewitness footage from General Santos City shows the ground shaking, debris flying, and trees swaying as the calamity strikes Mindanao. The city sits just 15 kilometers from the earthquake's epicenter. Residents report furniture thrown across rooms and appliances destroyed as aftershocks continue.

Tsunami warnings are issued across the Philippines and Indonesia by the U.S.'s Tsunami Warning System. Coastal residents urged to move to higher ground immediately.
