Gauteng rolls out HIV prevention jab on Monday

The Gauteng Health Department will begin the phased rollout of the new HIV prevention injection, Lenacapavir, on Monday, 07 June 2026.

Gauteng has been identified as a key implementation site, as the country's most populous province and one of the regions with a high HIV burden.

The department says Lenacapavir will be introduced at 133 facilities across the province, targeting those at high risk of HIV infections.

The rollout forms part of a nationwide initiative announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week.

The Gauteng Health Department says Phase One of the rollout will prioritise adolescent girls and young women, adolescent boys and young men, key populations, including sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender persons and people who inject drugs, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women who remain vulnerable to HIV infections.
