The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has revealed that R8.3 million rand in bursary funding was allocated by the Free State Office of the Premier without following proper processes.
Acting SIU Head, Leonard Lekgetho says some bursaries were awarded to foreign nationals, relatives of government officials and individuals who did not qualify.
The investigation also found that officials approved bursaries negligently and failed to exercise adequate oversight.
In total, 161 students benefited from the said bursaries, with the alleged irregularities occurring during the province's 2017/2018 administration.
For more on this we now bring in Sabelo Ngwenya from ANCYL and SIU Spokesperson, Selby Makgotho.
