Poland’s Maja Chwalińska made a surprising breakout in this year’s French Open, making it further in the grand slam tournament than famous Polish female tennis players such as Iga Światek and Magda Linette. But the dominance of Polish players on the court is part of a broader phenomenon of Central and Eastern European women in tennis. Her semifinal opponent is Russia’s Diana Schnaider. Why is that?

“There is this dominance from this kind of Eastern European region of particularly Slavic players who are really dominating the women’s game,” said Jon Carter, TVP World’s Sports Editor, citing Belarus’ Irina Sabalenka, who “attributed it to a kind of tough upbringing and tough training methods. So she had this kind of, what they commonly call in the tennis world, a kind of Soviet training method.”

The training, which requires immense discipline and favors starting at a young age is also a considerable expense, or even, “a sacrifice” for families like that of Chwalińska, who have limited means, with the Polish player being a daughter of a receptionist and a miner, especially considering “How many players are going to make it in tennis is a very limited amount.”
