Drought and water shortages deepen crisis in rural Afghanistan

Afghanistan's worsening drought is pushing farmers and families to the brink in Herat province, where falling water tables have forced some to dig wells more than 100 metres deep in search of water. Agriculture accounts for a quarter of the country's GDP, yet fields and orchards are drying up across the west of the country. An estimated 33 million people face severe water shortages nationwide. Without government investment in dams and water storage, farmers warn the land could soon become barren.
