Teachers in northern Nigeria protest over abduction of 42 schoolchildren in Borno State

Teachers in northeastern Nigeria have taken to the streets of Maiduguri to demand the release of 42 schoolchildren abducted in Borno State last month.
Around 1,000 members of the National Union of Teachers staged a protest, calling for stronger protection for schools, students and educators.
The demonstration highlights ongoing fears over school safety more than a decade after the mass kidnapping of schoolgirls in Chibok by Boko Haram in 2014.
Teachers say repeated attacks are undermining public confidence in education and leaving many parents fearful of sending their children to school.
Union leaders urged authorities to fully implement a safe schools initiative to protect learners, teachers and educational facilities.
The government says it is addressing the concerns, but educators warn that insecurity, conflict and displacement continue to threaten access to education across the region.
For many protesters, the abduction of 42 children is part of a wider crisis in which education remains one of the biggest casualties of insecurity.
