Concerns over Free State hung municipalities ahead of polls

Concerns are growing in hung municipalities in the Free State and the country ahead of the local government elections.

Political analyst, Professor Sethulego Matebesi predicts that coalition municipalities will dominate the political landscape and flags Mangaung Metro municipality as one of them.

Though this could be the reality for many, Matebesi says the instability of frequent changes of leadership in areas like Maluti-A-Phofung is a major concern as service delivery is hampered.

Unlike in 2016, when only Metsimaholo municipality was under coalition, more hung municipalities emerged in 2021 as the ANC lost support to smaller parties.
